In cases of constant headaches, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), or joint pain, craniomandibular dysfunction is often diagnosed late – if at all. The clinical picture of craniomandibular dysfunction often manifests itself through symptoms in the jaw, teeth, and head area, i.e., close to the temporomandibular joints. However, symptoms can also occur far away from the temporomandibular joints throughout the body, resulting from a physical malfunction of the masticatory system. Psychological stress can also be a trigger, manifesting, for example, in persistent nighttime teeth grinding. We clarify this using one of our diagnostic methods, which we offer to patients from the city and neighboring communities such as Wedemark, Garbsen, or Isernhagen. One mechanical therapy solution is splint therapy. Optionally, electrical stimulation can also be administered using a TENS device, which we have at our practice. Our splint therapy with custom-made bionators and biplane splints should not be confused with a conventional protective splint, which protects the tooth substance from abrasion when teeth are ground. Our functional splints, on the other hand, bring the heads of the temporomandibular joints (condyles) into the desired position and hold them there permanently.
